Top Nine...Part Two

Apr 14, 2010 -- 8:29am
Well, it’s the Top Nine…again, but the pressure is really on tonight. Two contestants will go home on Wednesday’s result show, so the idols need to wow us with some amazing performances.

Adam Lambert, one of the highlights from Season 8, comes back to mentor the Idols, and I assumed the Idol producers did this to help boost their ratings since they’ve been trying to inch past Dancing with the Stars’ numbers for a couple weeks now, but Idol producer Ken Warwick claims they brought Adam back to help his struggling career. Adam’s response to this? Well, Adam told Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t feel like I’m struggling at all. I think things are right where they need to be. My single ‘What Do You Want From Me,’ is just breaking into the Top 10 right now.” (FYI: Adam will perform his single on Wednesday’s results show.) I think Adam did a nice job as mentor, and it was nice to see him and his mom in the front row for the performances.

Tonight’s songs are the hits of Elvis Presley, and the contestants attempt to create performances worthy of a king. Adam says he hopes the performances “give you something to listen to, to look at, and to feel.” I’m so excited!
First up is Crystal Bowersox with the gospel/bluesy song “Saved”.  She looks likes she’s really having a good time tonight. She’s showing off her playful side with her bedazzled electric guitar. Randy said it was like the second coming of Bonnie Raitt.  Simon congratulates her for not “falling into the karaoke trap,” which he predicted would catch others.

Andrew Garcia is next, and he sings his version of “Hound Dog”. Adam totally called Andrew on being too boring during the mentoring session. Perhaps Andrew will take this to heart and do something great.  Nope. Randy doesn’t like it; Ellen does; Kara does not; and Simon believes “all the coolness” was sucked out of Andrew.  This does not bode well for Andrew, and I think that this will be the end of the road for him. Very sad. On a lighter note, however, remember last week when Crystal was talking about Lee and Andrew’s friendship, and she said that the two of them would have “Danny Gokey babies?” Well, this is a side-by-side comparison of a photo of Danny Gokey from Idol Season 8 with a morph of Lee and Andrew. Hilarious, isn’t it?

Tim Urban comes out next with “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.” Adam Lambert suggested he finish the song in a falsetto, but Tim didn’t do it. He’s not quite at the taking risk stage yet, but it works for him. Randy liked it. Ellen said it was beautiful. Kara said it was his best performance. Simon cheesily commented, “you went from zero to hero”. I suppose it was pretty good, and I already think the teenage girl vote will get him into the top 5 at least, but I have to admit, I wasn’t paying much attention to the performance, because I was trying to figure out who Ryan was slow-dancing with in the audience. Turns out it was Michael Sarver from Season 8.

“Satisfy Me” is Lee Dewyze’s song for the night. The judges are impressed, as usual, and they repeat the note they’ve given a billion times about relaxing and smiling more. I think the problem is that Lee has one of those devil-may-care crooked smiles, and if you’re not on the right side, it looks like a frown. Maybe. We could definitely see his smile when Simon said his performance was “on the money—full stop.”

Aaron Kelly sings “Blue Suede Shoes”. I like Aaron so much. He’s what I think this show should really be about. Discovering young talent that should be developed, not necessarily studio ready voices. The judges give mixed reviews, and I have to agree that it was a little karaoke, but I still like him very much, and he has an incredible voice.

Next up is my pick to win, Siobhan Magnus with “Suspicious Minds.” This was a disappointment for me. Not only was it a bad song choice and an ok vocal performance, there was also no drama or fun in the performance. I thought for sure Adam would help her create something dynamic for this week, but nope. I really hope this doesn’t spell disaster for Siobhan, because there will be no more judges’ saves to bring her back if she gets voted off on Wednesday.

Michael Lynche sings “In the Ghetto”. I thought this was an excellent choice for Michael, and his voice was very strong. I actually had chills on my chills when he finished singing.  I agreed with Ellen. I’m glad they saved him too.

“Baby What Ya Want Me To Do” is Katie Stevens song choice. I thought she sounded like a young Reba. The performance was good, and all the judges were impressed, save Simon, who thought it was “loud and annoying.” Well, I’m not a huge fan of Katie’s, but I was not annoyed by her performance at all. I thought it was very strong, but I still think her time is up on the show, and I believe she’ll be joining Andrew in the castaway boat on Wednesday.

The final performance of the night is Casey James singing“Lawdy Miss Clawdy”. It had a nice funky vibe, and Casey was definitely taking the earlier notes directed at Lee to smile and be “playful.” The judges still wanted more, though. Perhaps if he let his hair down and took off his shirt? Hmm? I don’t know. I’m still not crazy about Casey, but there’s no way he’s going home this week.

So, to recap, my predictions for elimination are: Katie and Andrew, and I’m very excited to see Adam perform “What Do You Want from Me” on the results show!
